The Girondins put up a good fight but the reigning champions and league leaders got the better of them in the second half.
And yet, things had started brightly for the visitors. After 15 minutes of Parisian domination, Bordeaux snatched a goal against the run of play when Ui-Jo Hwang headed in Toma Basic's well-placed corner (18’).
But Paulo Sousa's side only managed to hold onto that lead for 7 minutes before PSG's Edison Cavani pulled the hosts level (25’). The Girondins refused to let their heads go down, and made the most of a rare period of weakness for the champions following the injury sustained by Thiago Silva.
The tension finally boiled over in injury time of the first half, when Marquinhos nudged PSG in front (45+2) only for Pablo to sneak an equaliser from a botched clearance two minutes later. 2-2 at half-time after a thrilling first period.
Bordeaux came out firing after the break, with chances for both Samuel Kalu (48’) and Hwang (51’) before Pablo connected with a Toma Basic delivery to come within a whisker of scoring again (56’). The Girondins had plenty of chances but failed to make them count, a profligacy they would soon come to regret when Marquinhos scored his second of the evening to put Paris back in front (63').
Six minutes later Kyllian Mbappé made it 4-2 (69’). But just as PSG seemed to have finally got a grip on this game, Bordeaux piled on the pressure and won a series of corners (73’). Bordeaux absolutely refused to give up on this match, and Ruben Pardo's stunning strike from outside the box set the stage for a breathless finish (83’).
The Girondins kept on pushing in search of an equaliser, but Thomas Tuchel's side held on for dear life. PSG were reduced to 10 men in injury time after Neymar was sent off (91'), but the score remained unchanged. 4-3 to PSG, a disappointing result for the Girondins who caused all sorts of problems for the Parisian defence with an encouragingly courageous and creative team performance.
