This Thursday night trip down to Pau had all the makings of a classic cup upset, and that's exactly how it turned out. The magic of the cup, as they say. The Girondins exit the competition in embarrassing fashion, with Gueye snatching a winner deep in extra time and sparking jubilant scenes at Stade Hâmeau (3-2).
Name put the hosts in front early on, as the Girondins dominated possession but failed to make it count in front of goal. That early goal seemed to kick Bordeaux into gear, and Pau keeper Bertrand pulled off two fine saves in quick succession (35' and 36'). Josh Maja levelled with a lucky goal just before half time (41'). The Girondins were looking forward to the break, and a better second half, until Pau caught them off guard. Jarju slipped past his man and beat Gaëtan Poussin from close range (2-1, 44').
The Girondins looked much brighter in the second half, with Cafu hitting the pot (51') and Hwang Ui-Jo rattling a shot off the crossbar (61'). Nicolas De Préville came on for Josh Maja (73'), and finally got the equaliser with a wonderful free kick (83').
Extra time beckoned, and the Girondins were once again dominating possession but struggling to find their way past a solid and highly-motivated Pau defence. The nightmare scenario became reality in the 117th minute, when Gueye pounced on an ill-judged pass and slammed the ball past Gaëtan Poussin. 3-2, game over and goodnight. The Girondins were on the receiving end of a cup upset they'd probably rather forget.
