In their final match of the year 2019, Bordeaux faced a serious challenge. On a playing surface rendered extremely difficult by the weather conditions, and faced with an in-form Rennes side, Paulo Sousa's side were looking to put an end to their losing streak. Unfortunately the evening ended in another narrow defeat for the Girondins  (1-0), in spite of their solid performance. The man who made the difference was Mbaye Niang. With less than ten minutes left to play, the striker connected with a cross from Del Castillo, via Tait, to score the only goal of the match (83’). And yet, Bordeaux deserved so much more. The first half was very evenly-balanced, with Toma Basic looking particularly good in the centre of midfield. Bordeaux's best chances at goal fell to Jimmy Briand (16’, 27’), while Léa Siliki (19’), Niang (30’) and Bourigeaud (37’) had shots for the hosts. The second half was a bit more eventful, with big chances on both sides.  Samuel Kalu fired in a cross which swerved the crowd to land sweetly for Loris Benito, but Loris' shot flew just over the bar (55’). Rennes, meanwhile, were being frustrated by the ever-dependable Benoît Costil. The keeper produced one of his most acrobatic saves ever to keep out Da Silva, before stopping the follow-up effort from Léa Siliki (71’). In the dying minutes of the game, Bordeaux had one last chance to salvage something from this game. Breaking down the left, Samuel Kalu cut inside and fired off a powerful, swerving drive. Mendy flew through the air to keep it out (87’). Game over for Bordeaux. Despite a solid and courageous performance, the Girondins came away empty-handed. Although Paulo Sousa's worked hard and never lost their fighting spirit, they lacked precision in the final third. Now it's time for a short winter break before the rest of the season. The Girondins will be back in action on the 3rd of January, with a Coupe de France third-round tie against Le Mans (20:55).
