The Girondins de Bordeaux are very pleased to announce the signing of Edson André Sitoe, better known as Mexer. The central defender's contract with Rennes is due to end soon, and he has signed up for four seasons here in Bordeaux (June 2023). He will join his new team-mates for pre-season training. Born 8th September 1988 in Maputo (Mozambique), Mexer started his career in Mozambique and won the league with Grupo Desportivo de Maputo. His performances soon attracted attention from Portuguese scouts, as well as his national side. He made his debut at the African Cup of Nations in 2010 and has since racked up almost 40 caps. After signing for Sporting Portugal he was loaned to SC Olhanense where he spent two successful seasons, making 50 appearances before a new transfer to CD Nacional. On Madeira he soon confirmed his reputation as one of the best defenders in the Portuguese league, playing over 60 games in two seasons and scoring his first goals in European competition. 2014 saw a major change of direction when Mexer signed for Stade Rennais FC. His first seasons got off to an excellent start, with two goals in just his second Ligue 1 appearance (a 6-2 victory over Evian TG). He has now spent a total of 5 seasons in Brittany, making 118 appearances in Ligue 1 and lifting the Coupe de France just a few weeks ago (Rennes beat PSG on penalties), having scored the crucial equaliser in the final. Mexer is an experienced central defender who is particularly strong in the air. He is also a solid tackler and passer, with an impeccable knowledge of the French top flight. The Club is delighted to have secured his signature, and we look forward to watching Mexer play for years to come. In the meantime, we wish him all the best for his last few games with Stade Rennais.
