Strasbourg set the tempo early on in this game, playing a high defensive line and testing the Bordeaux back line with a series of long-distance efforts (Thomason 12', Martinez 25'). The Girondins were tentative going forward, but solid at the back. Just before the break a corner found François Kamano in what looked to be a promising position inside the box, but unfortunately his overstretched shot slipped outside the post (42’). Chances on goal were few and far between, and that continued into the second half. Both sides were playing defensively, with the hosts still relying on long shots to open up the Bordeaux defence: Sissoko (50’), Martinez (66') and Mothiba (83') all tried their luck from long range, but Benoît Costil had it covered! With time ticking away, François Kamano forced an excellent save from the Strasbourg keeper with a well-struck free kick (85’). This game looked destined to end in a goalless draw, but Strasbourg had one more trick up their sleeves: Kenny Lala. Deep into injury time he popped up and got the better of Costil (90’+ 3’), snatching all 3 points for Strasbourg. A bitterly frustrating result for the Girondins, who worked hard all evening and were convinced they had the draw in the bag. The Bordeaux boys will have an opportunity to get their revenge this Wednesday, when they return to the Stade de la Meinau for their league cup semi-final clash.
