The Girondins got off to a promising start, dominating possession and pinning Zenit back with wave after wave of attacking football. The first sight of goal came in the 4th minute, but Samuel Kalu's volleyed effort was too close to the keeper. Five minutes later the winger was at it again, but this time his shot lacked power. François Kamano came within a whisker of opening the scoring in the 31st minute, but his powerful drive bounced back off the woodwork. He managed to connect with the rebound, only to push his left-footed shot wide of the post. Two minutes later the game finally tilted in Bordeaux's favour when Youssouf Sabaly won a penalty which François Kamano duly took and scored (1-0). Zenit came perilously close to equalising just before half time when Paredes picked out Zabolotny in a dangerous position, but Benoît Costil put paid to that attack with an excellent save. The second half was a very different affair, as Zenit finally managed to hold onto the ball and put some pressure on the Girondins. Bordeaux still created a few chances, including a decent header from substitute Jimmy Briand (59'). Eventually the Girondins were caught napping by a rapid Zenit counter-attack, which found Zabolotny unmarked inside the box (71'). A simple finish levelled the scores (1-1).   Bordeaux threw themselves forward in search of a winning goal, but Zenit shut the game down expertly. Nicolas De Préville, a late sub in the 85th minute, came very close to snatching a winner, but ultimately it was not to be (1-1). Once again, Bordeaux deserved more than they got.
