Montpellier started brightly, with Skhiri sending a powerful shot just wide of the post (9'). Barely two minutes later Paul Lasne connected with a promising cross in the middle but failed to make it count. The hosts were soon rewarded for their efforts when ex-Girondin Gaëtan Laborde got the better of Benoît Costil with a header. 1-0 to Montpellier after 17 minutes. The Girondins finally managed to hold onto the ball for a little while, and Yann Karamoh and Jimmy Briand got a chance to test the notoriously solid Montpellier defence. Back at the other end, Gaëtan Laborde very nearly made it two with a stinging counter-attack (38’). Benoît Costil pulled off a superb save to tip the ball onto his left post. Seconds before half time, Yann Karamoh picked out an unmarked Jimmy Briand with a brilliantly-timed cross. MHSC keeper Benjamin Lecompte came off his line well to keep the hosts ahead at the break (45+2’). The Girondins came out shooting in the second half, with François Kamano the first to test Lecompte. The keeper stood firm: Kamano's 8th goal of the season would have to wait (48’). Bordeaux's hopes of a comeback were doused abruptly when Pablo handled the ball inside the box, conceding a penalty. Andy Delort sent Benoît Costil the wrong way, making it 2-0 to MHSC (52’). The pace of the game accelerated as the Girondins sought desperately to fight their way back into this game. Yann Karamoh (56’) and Jimmy Briand (59’) both narrowly missed the mark. Bordeaux kept piling on the pressure, but Benjamin Lecompte took it all in his stride. He produced yet another excellent, diving save to turn away a goal-bound shot from François Kamano (78’). It just wasn't the Girondins' day, and despite their best efforts they slipped to a 2-0 defeat against a well-drilled and disciplined Montpellier side.
