A HISTORIC VICTORY TO KICK THINGS OFF 26th May 1949, 5-0 Bordeaux

The first ever meeting between Monaco and Bordeaux came in the second division! An unusual turn of events, and the only time the two sides have ever met outside of Ligue 1. The end of the season was fast approaching, and the Girondins' trip to Monte Carlo turned out to be something of a holiday (5-0). Camille Libar (25’ & 78’) and Mustapha Ben M’Barek (29’ & 42’) got two goals each, Edouard Kargu got the fifth (73’). This victory sealed Bordeaux's return to D1, finishing joint top of the league with RC Lens.

A HISTORIC DEFEAT 18th January 1986, 9-0 Monaco

Bordeaux were at the top of their game. But despite winning the league in both 1984 and 1985, the Girondins were going through a rough spell when they travelled to Monaco for their 27th game of the season. Aimé Jacquet's side were 3rd in the league, six points behind Paris SG. Monaco were down in sixth. And then the Girondins went and lost… 9-0 ! An incredible score which seemed to defy all sporting logic. Dropsy, Battiston, Tigana, Girard and Giresse all started that game, but something went horribly wrong. The only good thing to come from this experience was a bon mot from Claude Bez, relayed by Marius Trésor on Girondins TV: "It's better to lose one game 9-0 than to lose nine games 1-0 ».

ANOTHER GOALFEST 22nd March 1995, 6-3 to Monaco

Another nine-goal thriller, but not all for the same side. After winning 3-0 in the home tie, Bordeaux travelled to Monaco and suffered a thrashing. Monaco established a 3-0 lead within half an hour courtesy of Sonny Anderson (11’, 15’) and Victor Ikpeba (29’). Bordeaux responded with goals from Christophe Dugarry (32’), Grimandi (own goal 63’) and Bixente Lizarazu (76’). At 4-3 with fifteen minutes left Bordeaux still had their chances, but Sonny Anderson (77’) and Dan Peterson (85’) put the game to bed. The Girondins sacked their manager after this thrashing.

PAYBACK 17th February 2008, 6-0 Bordeaux

Bordeaux may have suffered the heaviest defeat in the club's history at Stade Louis II, but this was also the scene of our biggest victory! In Laurent Blanc's first season in charge, the Girondins were in second place just 4 points behind Lyon. This away trip to Monaco (7th place) looked like a tricky match... but Bordeaux ran out 6-0 winners. And yet, it was 0-0 at half-time! Bordeaux then snatched three goals in 15 minutes courtesy of Fernando Cavenaghi (51’, 65’) and Johan Micoud (60’). Frustrated, Diego Perez hauled down David Bellion and earned himself a red card (66’). The Girondins then scored three more to add insult to injury: Marouane Chamakh (81’), Johan Micoud (87’) & Gabriel Obertan (90’+1).

AN INCREDIBLE COMEBACK 21st December 2008, 4-3 to Bordeaux

And who could forget this thriller from 2008? Bordeaux were down in third place in the league, equal on points with Marseille and three points behind Lyon. Monaco were in 12th. The Girondins were determined to get a positive result before Christmas. But the ride was far from easy. Pino scored first for Monaco (13’) and Licata made it two before the break (43’)... and then added a third just after half-time (50’). Game over? Oh no. Laurent Blanc took a gamble and brought on Jussiê and Marouane Chamakh for Abdou Traoré and Fernando. The Moroccan centre forward gave Bordeaux (52’) a glimmer of hope, before Alou Diarra fired in a magnificent shot for the second goal. The Girondins kept pushing forward and the final minutes of the game were unbelievable. Marouane Chamakh equalised from a corner (87’) and two minutes later Fernando Cavenaghi snatched the winner (89’). What a game, what a season!
