This game is one of the historic highlights of the French footballing calendar. Un classique. Two historic clubs, and two highly-motivated sets of players. Marseille dominated the early possession in front of their home crowd, but Bordeaux left them little space to work with. Benoît Costil pulled off three huge saves, and Nicolas De Préville cleared off the line to deny Germain an early goal (22’).
Around the half-hour mark, Gaëtan Laborde headed wide at the other end. So far the Girondins had been calm and collected in defence, waiting for an opportunity to break. Marseille had nothing to show for all their possession in midfield, but the breakthrough finally came from a set piece. Thauvin headed the hosts in front from a corner (35’, 1-0). Gaëtan Laborde almost responded immedaiately at the other end, but Pelé caught his header on the line (39’).
Gus Poyet decided to shake things up early in the 2nd half, bringing on François Kamano for Nicolas De Préville (52’). Benoît Costil produced another spectacular save to deny Sanson. A few minutes later it took a superb tackle from Otavio to deny OM another goal. Martin Braithwaite was sent on to replace Otavio and offer another attacking option for the last 20 minutes.
Bordeaux were dominating possession now, but time was ticking away. Malcom's shot was wide of the mark (80’). Diego Contento came on (briefly) for Théo Pellenard. The Girondins kept on pushing for that equaliser, while Benoît Costil had time to produce two more fantastic saves: one from Sanson's long-range effort (90+2), then another to stop Gustavo's last-ditch attempt (90+3).
Game over: the Girondins' winning run came to an end with a narrow defeat at the hands of their old enemies Olympique de Marseille.
