The rain was beating down as Bordeaux and Strasbourg took to the field at the Matmut Atlantique. Thierry Laurey's side kicked off, and promptly took the lead. In just the second minute, Martin Terrier won the ball in midfield and played a through ball for Stéphane Bahoken. Bahoken dribbled past Vukasin Jovanovic and smashed the ball beyond Costil's reach. 1-0 to Strasbourg.
After this early shock, both sides settled into a rhythm. Otavio picked up the first yellow card of the evening for a rough challenge on Jean Eudes Aholou (11’).
Bordeaux began to dominate possession, but where unable to break down Strasbourg at the back. Otavio tried his luck from 40 yards, but RCS keeper Alexandre Oukidja had it covered. Strasbourg soon won a corner at the other end, but Benoît Costil caught it well and sent the Girondins back on the attack. Nicolas De Préville was hauled down by Ernest Seka, and out came the yellow card again (19’).
Bordeaux kept pushing forward and won two corners in the space of two minutes (22’ and 24’). The visitors cleared both with ease. The Girondins kept pushing forward, with Alexandre Mendy and Jonathan Cafú playing a nice one-two through the middle. The Brazilian shot from the edge of the box, but missed the target (26’). A few minutes later Lukas Lerager tried his luck, but also failed to trouble Oukidja. Gourvennec's side soon changed tack and attempted to break down the wings: Cafú fired in a cross to the back post and won a corner. Nothing came of it.
Alexandre Mendy had another attempt from long range, but again missed the target. Gourvennec decided it was time for a change, bringing off Otavio for Younousse Sankharé (35’). Things went from bad to worse when Strasbourg won a free kick 30 yards from goal and Dimitri Liénard placed the ball neatly into the top corner (37’). 2-0 to Strasbourg.
Thierry Laurey made a substitution of his own, as Bakary Koné limped off injured and was replaced by Yoann Salmier (40’).
Bordeaux came back from the break re-energized and determined to turn things around. Strasbourg waite for the chance to counter-attack. Martin Terrier fired a warning shot just past Benoît Costil (49’). François Kamano came on for Jonathan Cafú in the 52nd minute. Both Jérémy Toulalan (57’) and Younousse Sankharé (59’) found themselves in the referee's notebook.
With an hour on the clock Lukas Lerager connected with a free kick from Valentin Vada. His header lacked accuracy. A flash counter-attack saw Martin Terrier slice through the Bordeaux defence to set up a one-on-one with Benoît Costil. The keeper had no chance: 3-0 Strasbourg.
The Girondins kept trying but the consolation never came. Strasbourg almost made it four when Dimitri Lienard picked out Nuno Da Costa in the middle. His shot rebounded off the crossbar (75’). Younousse Sankharé came close once again at the other end. Alexandre Mendy limped off with an inured knee (86’) and Bordeaux had to finish the game with 10 men.
