Bordeaux abroad!

The Disney Girls Soccer Showcase certainly lived up to expectations for the U19s of FC Girondins de Bordeaux USA. This Sunday at 3pm (local time), the team coached by Nenad Vilotijevic took on Florida Sunrise Sting in the tournament final. Both teams had won their first two matches, but the Girondins had the better goal average. The Florida sun was shining down on the incredible facilities at ESPN Wide World Sports, in the heart of Disney World, as the two sides took to the field for an 80-minute battle. The Sting set out to make their mark on this game right from the get-go, demonstrating their impressive athletic capabilities and intensive pressing game. Heather Markiewicz's side were hard pressed for much of the match. But the Girondins were solid at the back, keeping the score at 0-0 in spite of the intense attacking pressure. Ironically, the Sting finally managed to score in a period where the Girondins were starting to take control. The goal came from a free kick in the 72nd minute. Victory seemed to be slipping away before their eyes, but our girls never gave up. They kept faith with their rapid passing and movement, and kept on creating chances. The equaliser finally came courtesy of a superb solo effort from Alexandra Poltorak, helped by some great running off the ball by her attacking partners. Poltorak spotted an opening, and smashed in a shot from 25 yards which rebounded in off the crossbar. A decisive goal in the dying seconds of the game (1-1). The parents on the sidelines exploded in celebration, and the traditional "Allez Bordeaux" rang out with a slight American accent. Thanks to this third tournament victory, Girondins USA (est. 1999) moves into the top 15 soccer clubs in the USA, entering the top 5 in the north-east and becoming the most successful team in Maryland.
