Our American adventure is well under way

Based in Maryland, not far from US capital Washington D.C., FC Girondins de Bordeaux USA is a thriving women's soccer club. With three girls' teams at U13, U15 and U19 levels, our club's American offshoot is proudly flying the flag for the Girondins on the East coast of the USA. The structure of the American soccer federation sees clubs taking part in regional leagues, but also in tournaments at national level. Over Thanskgiving Weekend, the U19 side travelled to one of the biggest events of the year: the Disney Girls Soccer Showcase. The showcase sees over a hundred teams from all over the country descend upon ESPN Wide World Sports in Disney World, making it one of the most important events in women's soccer. The best teams in the country face off in three matches over the space of four days, watched by scouts from some of the top sports universities. After a strong showing last year, the girls from Olney were back this year wearing the blue and white of Bordeaux - and ready to win! Nenad Vilotijevic, the U19 coach who has been working tirelessly to develop the club since 2009, fielded a strong team for the first game against Virginia's Loudoun Soccer. After a tough first half (the game kicked off at 8am!), the young midfield general Danielle Fuentes inspired the team to a 4 - 1 victory (with goals from Caroline Koutsos, Alexandra Poltorak and two from Megan Baker). "Allez Bordeaux" rang out from the parents on the sidelines. The second game was played on Saturday morning at the slightly more generous time of 11:30am (5:30pm French time), and saw Girondins de Bordeaux USA take on Windy City Pride of Chicago, Illinois. But the girls from the windy city were simply blown off the park by the Girondines: a crushing 6-0 victory with goals from Heather Markiewicz (5’), Olivia Paolucci (28’ & 49’), Danielle Fuentes (40’) and Megan Baker (68’ & 74’). The final match was played on Sunday afternoon (9pm French time), and the 1-1 draw with Florida's Sunrise Sting was enough to seal overall victory for the Girondins USA!
