After a tentative start the match kicked up a gear in the 11th minute, when Araujo forced a diving save from Benoît Costil. The Girondins were hard pressed by Lille in these early stages, with a high tempo and plenty of spaces opening up for both sides. After a quarter of an hour Bordeaux's first chance came from a free kick struck by Malcom, cleared by Pepe. Lille kept pushing forward, and Benzia had a decent shot blocked (20’). Next up was Nicolas De Préville, with his first ever shot for Bordeaux. Maignan came off his line well, and the ball rolled wide (21’). The Girondins came closer still when Malcom floated a corner onto the head of Younousse Sankharé - just wide! (28’)
With half an hour on the clock, Thiago Maia was shown a straight red for a serious foul on Malcom. The Girondins had an unexpected advantage. Lille coach Marcelo Bielsa took off Benzia for Ballo Touré to even things up (38’). Bordeaux attempted to make the most of their numerical superiority and pushed forward. Under pressure from Nicolas De Préville, Ballo Touré conceded a corner. The ball found its way to Otavio but the Brazilian's shot was wide of the mark (40’). Nicolas De Préville's header went the same way (41’). At the other end, Benoît Costil did well to stop a half-volley from El Ghazi (42’). Joinint Otavio in the referee's notebook, Vukasin Jovanovic was shown a yellow card just before half time.
The first chance of the second half fell to Malcom, but Maignan caught it without too much trouble (51’). Lille were struggling to hold onto the ball, and the Girondins were keen to turn this to their advantage. Bordeaux had plenty of space, but were struggling to make it count. Lille pinned all their hopes on counter-attacks, and Pepe came close to creating an upset with a shot which scraped off the outside of the post (57’). With an hour played, Valentin Vada came on for Otavio just before Amadou forced another diving save from Benoît Costil (61’). Jocelyn Gourvennec made his second substitution of the evening, bringing on Cafu for François Kamano (65’). Somehow, Lille kept pushing forward.
In the 70th minute, Younousse Sankharé placed a shot… just outside the post. Another missed opportunity for Bordeaux. With fifteen minutes left to play, Gaëtan Laborde came on for Younousse Sankharé. The Girondins were still unable to break down this Lille team, lacking the energy and spark required to unsettle the hosts' well-drilled defence. Valentin Vada had the last shot of the game. Wide of the mark again (90’).
The Girondins return home with a single point from Stade Pierre Mauroy, despite playing most of the game with a numerical advantage. Nevertheless, they remain unbeaten after 5 games in Ligue 1.
