The Girondins de Bordeaux are very pleased to announce the arrival of French international goalkeeper Benoît Costil from Rennes, after six years with Stade Rennais. After the traditional medical, Costil put pen to paper on a four-year deal which will keep him with the club until June 2021. He was visibly impressed by his first visit to the Girondins' training centre at Le Haillan: "The first impression is really good, I'm discovering all these facilities I didn't know about. The environment here is great, you can definitely feel the identity of the Girondins de Bordeaux." Born on 3rd July 1987 in Caen, Benoît Costil was trained at his hometown club. He made his way through the ranks of the Stade Malherbe Academy before making his Ligue 2 debut in 2005-2006, against Reims. After four games he settled into life as the club's reserve keeper, before making his Ligue 1 debut in the 2007-2008 season against Auxerre. He made a total of 5 appearances that season. Looking for more first-team experience, Benoît left Caen for a spell on loan with Vannes. Back in Ligue 2 he kickstarted his career, with 27 matches and a League Cup final... which Vannes lost to the Girondins (4-0). Benoît was on the bench that night. Nonetheless his strong season drew attention from elsewhere, and he made a permanent move from Caen to Sedan, where his career really took off. He played two full seasons in L2, winning the UNFP trophy for best goalkeeper in the division in 2011. Benoît moved to Stade Rennais as first-choice keeper in 2011, gradually becoming one of the best in France. Impressive for his reliability and stamina, he has played in 219 out of a possible 228 Ligue 1 matches over the past six seasons. But after two more unsuccessful finals (League Cup against Saint-Etienne in 2013 and Coupe de France against Jocelyn Gourvennec's Guingamp in 2014), Benoît is still on the hunt for silverware. In the meantime, Costil's solid performances in the league have earned him recognition from France's national coaches. After featuring in the squad for the past three years, he earned his first international cap in a friendly against Ivory Coast on 15th November 2016. At Euro 2016 he was Didier Deschamps' third-choice goalkeeper. At the age of 30, Benoît has already racked up over 300 professional appearances. He arrives in Bordeaux with a solid experience of French and international football. The Girondins de Bordeaux are delighted to be able to count on this talented keeper for the next four years! #BienvenueBenoît   Benoît Costil Position: Goalkeeper Date and place of birth: 3rd July 1987, Caen French international Height-Weight: 188cm – 86 kg Previous clubs: SM Caen, Vannes OC, CS Sedan-Ardennes, Stade Rennais FC 224 matches in Ligue 1 107 matches in Ligue 2 9 matches in UEFA Europa League Trophies: 2016: Euro final (France) 2014: Coupe de France final (Rennes) 2013: League Cup final (Rennes) 2011: Best goalkeeper in Ligue 2 2009: League Cup final (Vannes) 2007: Toulon Tournament winner (France) 2004: Euro U17 winner (France)
