A frustrating defeat in Lille [2-1]

Paul Baysse summed it up well after the game: "Frustrating." The Girondins were narrowly beaten in Lille. Toma Basic (30') levelled after Bamba scored early on (18'), then Fonte put the hosts back into the lead just before half time. Once again, Benoît Costil was on top form throughout. The match got off to a breathless start, with Hatem Ben Arfa firing in a shot which looked bound for the net until Maignan intervened (8'). Ten minutes later, Bamba put the hosts ahead (18', 1-0). Bordeaux fought hard to pull one back rapidly, and their efforts were soon rewarded. Toma Basic popped up to connect with a Hatem Ben Arfa corner, leaving the Lille keeper rooted to the spot (30', 1-1). 

Once again, Benoît Costil was superb this evening, saving the Girondins on several occasions. But even he was powerless to stop Fonte's shot, firing Lille back into the lead with the last set piece of the first half (45', 2-1). Bordeaux returned for the second half more determined than ever. Hatem Ben Arfa saw a shot fly wide (50'). Benoît Costil kept the saves coming, frustrating Ikone (52') and Yazici (86'). Paul Baysse also sacrificed himself to block another Ikone shot (66'). 

A late strike from Hwang Ui-Jo was not enough to turn the tide (86'). The Girondins have a marathon ahead of them in the run-up to Christmas, with four games in ten days. Next up are Saint-Etienne, Wednesday at 21:00.
