A tough night in Lyon [2-1]

The Girondins were narrowly beaten in Lyon, despite dominating for much of this entertaining match. Samuel Kalu (55') cancelled out Toko Ekambi's first half goal (31'), but Dubois snatched a winner in stoppage time (90+2). A bitter disappointment after a superb performance from Bordeaux. Is there anything more frustrating than football sometimes? Or more unfair? The Girondins deserved to win this game, and at the very least they deserved not to lose. Jean-Louis Gasset's team dominated for large spells, with Lyon offering little real threat.

A frustrating evening for Bordeaux's fans, players and coaches, but that's football! It's worth focusing on the positive aspects: the Girondins were combative and committed throughout, demonstrating real strength of character. When Toko Ekambi nudged the hosts ahead in the first half, it was against the run of play. But again, that's all part of the game! Lyon were 1-0 up at the break.

The second half kept up the same high tempo as the first, with Bordeaux dominating and Lyon offering little going forward. At the other end, both Rémi Oudin (49') and Ui-Jo Hwang (51') came close. The breakthrough finally came courtesy of Samuel Kalu, who smashed a peach of a shot into the top corner (1-1, 55'). Rémi Oudin came tantalisingly close to snatching a winner, but Lopes came off his line well (78'). The Girondins would have plenty of time to rue this missed opportunity, as things took a turn for the unexpected in added time. With the final whistle just seconds away, far out on the right flank Dubois floated in what may have been a shot or perhaps a cross. Whatever it was, it went in off the post (2-1).  

A crushing blow at the end of a solid performance from the Girondins. The boys can be proud of the way they played this evening, but the result remains a keen disappointment. A tough night in Lyon - sounds like a film...
