The first half of this match was at times unbearably intense, with chance after chance for both sides. In the opening minutes Ewa Pajor saw a goalbound shot magnificently stopped by Anna Moorhouse, followed in short order by two shots at the other end from Katja Snoeijs (8’, 9’), teed up by Melissa Herrera and Ines Jauréna.

Wolfsburg soon took the lead courtesy of Ewa Pajor, who headed in a clever ball from Pia-Sophie Wolter (1-0, 13’). Barely a minute later, Bordeaux were back on level terms thanks to Katja Snoeijs (1-1, 14’), with Melissa Herrera providing the assist. This goal had a galvanising effect on the Girondines, and Claire Lavogez promptly dribbled around two defenders and delivered a superb long ball for Katja Snoeijs, who forced another good save from Wolfsburg keeper Lisa Weiẞ (16’). Minutes later, Jill Roord pounced upon a poor clearance and scored Wolfsburg's second goal (2-1, 19’).

This breathless pace continued for the rest of the first half, with more chances for the Germans (36’ and 45’) and the Girondines (25’, 27’, 34’). Bordeaux suffered a setback when Melissa Herrera had to be stretchered off, and was replaced by Mickaëlla Cardia (40’).   Wolfsburg returned from the break with all guns blazing, pushing forward in a bid to extend their lead (47’, 48’). Girondines coach Patrice Lair decided it was time to bring off Maëlle Garbino and send on Ella Palis (52’).

That tactical change soon paid dividends, with Bordeaux winning two promising free-kicks (54’, 56’) and Andréa Lardez testing the keeper with a curling shot (58’). Nevertheless, two minutes later it was Wolfsburg who broke clear. Dominique Janssen headed home from a set piece to put the hosts two goals clear (3-1, 60’). The Girondins staff then opted for another attacking change, sending on Svava Ros Gudmundsdottir and Sisca Folkertsma for Katja Snoeijs and Ines Jauréna (65’).  Another savvy choice, as Mickäella Cardia soon narrowed the gap thanks to a beautifully-weighted assist from sub Sisca Folkertsma (3-2, 70’).

Wolfsburg had two late chances (77’, 81’), but the Bordeaux defence held firm. This 3-2 away defeat leaves the Girondines with everything to play for in the return leg. Bordeaux created countless chances and scored twice, against a team that have twice been crowned European champions. The Girondines now need a win in the return leg to secure their place in the Champions League group phase.
