Bordeaux started brightly, dominating possession, but it was the hosts who registered the first attempts on goal. The Girondins buckled down and got through the first fifteen minutes, then responded in the best possible manner when Rémi Oudin broke free down the left flank and fired in a low-flying cross for Alberth Elis. The Honduras international launched himself forward to score the first goal of the afternoon (17’, 1-0 to Bordeaux).

Galvanised by this goal, Bordeaux continued to push forward. Alberth Elis twice came close to doubling his tally, first from a Ricardo Mangas cross (21’) and again with a crisp shot which scraped just wide of the goal (26’). Soon enough, Rémi Oudin put the Girondins two goals to the good. Connecting with a magnificent ball from Javairo Dilrosun, the number 28 lodged his shot in the bottom corner (39’, 0-2). Juste before the break, ex-Girondin De Préville reduced the gap with a shot on the turn inside the box (45’, 1-2 Bordeaux).

Shortly after the break, Nguette equalised from a corner to continue the hosts' revival (51’, 2-2). The pace was relentless, and the Girondins soon retook the lead! Scampering onto a good ball from Yacine Adli, Rémi Oudin struck a low-flying shot just inside the post from the edge of the box. Initially denied for offside, the goal was then confirmed by the VAR official (65’, 2-3 Bordeaux).

But the action was far from over at the Stade Saint-Symphorien. Metz were reduced to 10 men when Boulaya hauled down Yacine Adli (68’), and yet they still managed to equalise courtesy of a lobbing header from Nguette (70’, 3-3). This set the scene for a frantic finale, with both teams pushing hard for a winner that never came. It was not for want of trying, with highlights including Jimmy Briand's athletic attempt to convert Gideon Mensah's cross (88’).
