Cheered on ferociously by the Virage Sud, Bordeaux set up to defend deep and strike on the counter. They succeeded in creating some dangerous situations early on,  with Ui-Jo Hwang (9’, 12’) and Alberth Elis (14’) the biggest threats. But both goalkeepers were on strong form, and Benoît Costil saved an early effort from Paqueta (10’).

There was plenty to enjoy in these opening exchanges, not least when Rémi Oudin smashed in a shot which grazed just outside the right post! (26’) Minutes later, Denayer scored from a corner to severely dampen the atmosphere in the Matmut Atlantique (29’, 0-1). But not for long: seven minutes later, Yacine Adli played a superbly-weighted ball out to Alberth Elis on the right flank. The Honduran international charged past his marker and fired in a low-flying cross to the back post, where Rémi Oudin was waiting to thump it into the back of the net! (36’, 1-1). 1-1 at half time seemed like a fair result, but Lyon's Thiago Mendes had other ideas - his long shot handed the visitors the lead once again (41’, 1-2).

After the break, Bordeaux focused on weathering the storm of Lyon's pressing and waiting for the right moment to strike on the counter. Their patience paid off at last when Alberth Elis launched an incredible solo attack from 40 metres out to grab the equalizer! (58’, 2-2)

The Girondins were visibly re-energised by this goal, and more determined than ever to take all three points. The final minutes of the game were frantic and fascinating, as Bordeaux continued to pile on the pressure and Lyon looked perilously close to cracking. Lopes produced a sensational save to deny Mbaye Niang from close range, and minutes later a goalmouth scramble from a set piece saw the ball scrape just centimetres outside his left post. Bordeaux were so, so close to winning this game, but will have to make do with a draw. The Girondins will be back in Ligue 1 action next Sunday 12 December in Troyes, kick-off at 3pm.
