All good things must come to an end someday [0-1]

Every year we awaited this game with trepidation, wondering if the record would fall. It had to happen one day... and that day was today. After 45 years of failure, Marseille finally won a game of football in Bordeaux. By the narrowest of margins, courtesy of a solitary goal scored by Cengiz Ünder (0-1, 37’). A goal which was fair reward for the visitors' first-half dominance. Determined, solid and well-organised, the Girondins put on a brave collective display. Harit (6’), Payet (16’), Ünder (27’) and Luan Peres (31’) all fired wide of the mark for OM, while Caleta-Car rattled one off the post (10’). Vladimir Petkovic stuck doggedly to their game plan, but were finally caught out by a poor clearance which gifted Cengiz Ünder the chance to beat Costil from close range.

The Girondins put in a courageous performance nonetheless. After a decent chance for Hwang Ui-Jo before the break (42’), they returned for the second half with renewed determination. Edson Mexer (47’), Timothée Pembélé (65’), Hwang Ui-Jo (69’) and Javairô Dilrosun (74’) all tried their luck, but failed to get the better of Pau Lopez. The Girondins' keeper was also on imperious form, and in the 2nd half alone Costil saved shots from Caleta-Car (52’), Guendouzi (55’), Ünder (62’ and 78’) and Payet (73’).

In spite of their bravery and determination, the Girondins slipped to a home defeat at the hands of Marseille for the first time since 1st October 1977 in a desolate, empty stadium, enlivened only slightly by the vociferous support of the dedicated fans who gathered outside the Matmut ATLANTIQUE. It hurts, of course it does. But this is not the end. We still have a huge battle ahead of us this season. Tomorrow we all need to pick ourselves up and get to work, building for brighter days ahead. We'll always remember that historic record, but all things must pass.
