The Girondines were too strong for Rodez this afternoon (3-1). This classy performance puts Patrice Lair 's side back in the top half of the table.

The wind was bitterly cold at Stade Sainte Germaine, but the Rodez keeper had no time to warm up! Sieber was kept very busy in the opening fifteen minutes or so, as Melissa Gomes (8’, 16’) and Maëlle Garbino (9’) tested the visitors' defence.

Bordeaux kept on pushing and the goal was not long in coming. After a blocked free kick caused a scramble in the box, Julie Thibaud struck with her left foot to put the Girondines ahead (1-0, 21’). Five minutes later Melissa Gomes found Maëlle Garbino with a superb pass; Bordeaux's top scorer did not need to think twice before slamming the ball past Sieber (2-0, 26’).

There were no more goals before half time, but there easily could have been. Sieber kept Rodez in the game for a little while longer, stopping shots from both Melissa Gomes (31’) and Maëlle Garbino (45’). There were very few chances at the other end, with the exception of a decent volley from Barbier which Mylène Chavas caught without too much trouble (39’).

The second half got off to a slower start, with some choppy play in midfield. When things finally settled down, Bordeaux stamped their authority on the game with their first chance of the half. Sisca Folkertsma switched things up and found Fiona Liaigre on the wing, who in turn picked ou Jelena Karlicic. Karlicic teed up Melissa Gomes, who sent the keeper the wrong way and sent Bordeaux three goals clear (3-0, 59’).

Patrice Lair's side could have scored even more, with Melissa Gomes (61’), Maëlle Garbino (68’) and Amanda Gutierres (87’) all coming close. Instead Rodez pulled one back, courtesy of an Andréa Lardez own goal (3-1, 75’). This mishap was entirely out of character, and takes nothing away from the captain's otherwise superb performance at the heart of the Bordeaux defence.
In any case it did nothing to change the result. Bordeaux secured their 2nd successive victory and moved back up into the top half of the table. They will be looking to keep that momentum going next Friday in Fleury, their last game of 2022. For now, players, staff and fans will all be relishing victory after this assured, entertaining team performance!
