From the outset, the game plan of both sides was clear to see. Up against a team who are currently bottom of the second division, Bordeaux dominated possession. Nîmes sat deep and prepared to defend for their lives. The Girondines settled in to this game of attack v. defence, but struggled to make their chances stick in the first half.
There was no shortage of crosses and shots, but clear-cut chances were hard to come by. Bordeaux's attempts to unlock the tightly-packed Nîmes defence were not helped by a very slippery playing surface, which amplified the slightest mishap.

Melissa Gomes came close with a header (17’) and Maëlle Garbino rattled a free kick off the crossbar (22’), but the breakthrough finally came from the penalty spot. Pulled down inside the box by the Nîmes keeper, Melissa Gomes won a spot-kick and did the honours herself (1-0, 38’).

After the break, Patrice Lair made two substitutions and decided to shake up his tactics. This reshuffle appeared to pay dividends immediately, as Gomes promptly doubled the lead. Pouncing on a poor clearance, Melissa fired a scorching volley just under the crossbar (2-0, 47’).

It looked like plain sailing for the Girondines, but Nîmes held on tight and almost punished a few signs of sloppiness in the Bordeaux midfield. There were plenty of chances on goal, too, including a powerful drive from Mickaëlla Cardia which hit the bar (56’), an off-the-line clearance to deny Melissa Gomes (61’) and a blazing effort from Maëlle Garbino which drew a spectacular save from the keeper (68’).

Bordeaux looked to be cruising to victory, but Nîmes injected some life into the game when Mathilde Bourgoin headed in to close the gap (2-1, 80’). This was just the wake-up call the Girondines needed, and they promptly responded in kind. Maëlle Garbino charged straight through the middle of the defence to lodge a shot underneath the crossbar (3-1, 88’), and a few minutes later Serena Pinto De Queiros latched onto a botched clearance to fire in a clever shot on the turn (4-1, 90’+1).
Bordeaux put in a very solid performance this afternoon, cruising into the next round in confident style!
