Girondins do the business against Nîmes [1-0]

The joy on Yoann Barbet's face when the final whistle sounded summed up just how much this victory meant to the team. Nîmes made the Girondins work incredibly hard for this victory, and the tension was at fever pitch. Josh Maja came incredibly close to scoring in the 66th minute, only to see his shot cleared off the line by a plunging Nîmes defender. Deliverance finally came in the 81st minute and, perhaps inevitably, it was Josh Maja who found the opening, sending the home crowd wild (1-0). Josh's strike was to be the only goal of the game, and after ten more minutes of tension the referee finally blew up and Bordeaux celebrated three more vital points.

The Girondins had the better of the second half and were deserved winners, but the first period had been a very tense and closely-matched affair. Even then it was Josh Maja who was the stand-out performer, testing Nîmes keeper Maraval in the 17th minute. Zuriko Davitaschvili also had a decent attempt saved, and Gaëtan Poussin was called into action shortly before half time (37'). His adroit snap save boosted Bordeaux's confidence. All in all the Girondins put in a serious, disciplined performance today to remain in the driving seat in the battle for promotion.
