So long and thanks for everything Josh!

Out of contract as of 30 June 2023, Josh Maja is leaving the club after four and a half years in navy blue. We want to thank Josh for everything he has done for our club. Born in December 1998 in Lewisham (England), Josh spent several years with the Manchester City academy before moving to Sunderland. Up in the north east he broke into the first team, becoming a regular by the age of 20. The Black Cats were in League One at the time, where Josh scored 17 goals in 49 appearances. He signed for the Girondins in January 2019 and made his debut in a home victory over Toulouse (2-1). His first goal came against Nîmes (2-1).

Josh went from strength to strength in the 2019-2020 season, scoring 8 goals and providing three assists in 24 appearances. These performances earned him a call up to the Nigeria squad, his first nod from the Super Eagles. Unfortunately, the season came crashing to a halt as a result of COVID-19, cutting off Josh in full swing. The next two seasons were somewhat trickier for our club. After making 17 appearances in 2020 (scoring 2 goals), Josh spent half a season on loan with Fulham. The 2021-2022 campaign was similar, with Josh spending the latter half of the season at Stoke City.

Josh returned to Bordeaux last summer and went on to have a superb season in Ligue 2. Playing at the forefront of the Girondins' attacking diamond, he racked up 6 goals and 3 assists in the first ten games to help put Bordeaux top of the table. He worked tirelessly all season, and ended up in the Ligue 2 team of the season, with 17 goals and 6 assists to his name.

The Girondins de Bordeaux would like to take this opportunity to pay tribute to Josh. Joining us at the age of 20, he has truly come of age in Bordeaux, as a player and as a person. He will be fondly remembered by all at the club, and by the fans too for his 29 goals and 9 assists in 92 appearances for the club. We wish Josh all the very best for the rest of his career, and hope that he will enjoy every success in the adventures to come.
